2P Prep 07/10/09

Finish the following note for Monday.

The experimental experiment

Fill two measuring cylinders with exactly 10cm3 one of acid and one of alkali. Pour the acid into a boiling tube, start adding the alkali 1cm3 at a time, after each addition test one drop to see if the solution is neutral (do this by dropping a drip onto some indicator paper), after 9cm3 of alkali has been added start adding it dropwise until a neutral solution has been obtained. You may have to add a drop or two of acid if you shoot past the neutral point.

We now have a neutral solution with no indicator to pollute the crystals.
Take this solution and heat it in a crucible to half volume (in other words the volume of the liquid is much lower than it started as but it is not completely dry.) We will put this solution into a crystallising dish to let the crystals grow.
